June 13 aftershocks

June 13, 2011

All Digital Fusion staff are safe and sound after 2 more big earthquakes today - a 5.5 and 6.0, shallow and close to the city. Aside from rattled nerves, a loss of power and some broken glassware we're fine.

We were scheduled to move into our new office premises today but a mixup with the internet connection meant we couldn't make the move. Three staff were there meeting with a client and while the building held up fine the newly resealed car park quickly flooded with liquefaction (sand and water). S our move in plans look somewhat uncertain - we'll have to wait and see how quickly things can be got back on track, but I can say one thing for sure: everyone in Christchurch just wants to get on with it.

Whether we're in the new place or continue from home, it'll be back to business on as usual - power is on to most of the city now, including our interim home offices and that plus internet is all we need.

(Actually in testament to the robustness with which modern infrastructure can be built internet connections from ADSL to fibre haven't failed at all in the earthquakes... it's just the buildings and the power supplies that are the weak points.)

Our servers didn't miss a beat - they're housed in at a very nice data centre which has huge amounts of backup power and net connectivity.

Thanks for all the thoughts and best wishes, stay in contact... we're still here, still doing great stuff.

– Craig.
